UBC Millwright Training

UBC millwrights are known throughout North America as the best trained and most well-prepared technicians for any project. Training lies at the heart of it all.

Training Is the Key

Contractors who employ Millwright Regional Council have access to unlimited, ongoing training for any project — according to standards that produce the same highly skilled labour regardless of location. Each year, we invest hundreds of thousands of dollars in training our members, from first-year apprentices to superintendents.

Journeypersons benefit from apprenticeships and skill-upgrade classes to help keep them on the cutting edge of innovations in materials and techniques. Educated, experienced foremen and superintendents receive specialized training programs designed to sharpen their supervisory skills — we build on a millwright’s on-the-job experience by adding leadership skills to help them motivate workers, communicate effectively and solve problems. We even offer customized training if a project needs it, and we provide training onsite, if that’s what it takes.

State-of-the-Art Facilities

The UBC’s International Training Center is a facility like no other in the world. At the ITC’s 1.2 million-square-foot campus, millwrights hone skills in confined space, using our turbine pit. They work on gas and steam turbines, conveyors, compressors and pumps, and they train using two 35-ton or four 20-ton overhead bridge cranes. UBC millwrights and instructors have access to the most up-to-date equipment and tools to help hone their craft.

In addition to training millwrights, the ITC is the home base for our initiative to train local trainers. This ensures trainers are delivering the most current craft-skills instruction to members at more than 250 local training centers across North America.

Preparing Millwrights for Safer Work

Safety is a critical component of training for Millwright Regional Council, and we ensure the knowledge level is maximized for confined space, disaster response, fall protection, first aid, CPR, and automated external defibrillation and more.
